A one off lesson, used at an interview, for AQA GCSE Language Unseen Poetry (Section C). The lesson is one hour long for baseline 4-6 children. PPT goes through basic skills for poetry, exam outline, what the examiner is looking for, how to spot devices and build an argument. The resources are attached including the poem, self assessment grid and unseen poetry mat.

A lesson based on chapter 10 of The Breadwinner in which Parvana and a friend get a new job digging bones. Pupils read and discuss the chapter and answer questions based on the chapter. Following this pupils then review what makes an effective letter and create their own. Included are the example letters (informal and formal) and a writing frame in order to create their own. Used with lower ability year 8.

Following this pupils then review what makes an effective recipe and create their own (just like the step by step actions the ladies used to turn Parvana into a boy). Included is the example recipe and a writing frame in order to create their own. Used with lower ability year 8.

Based on the look, say, cover, write, check system, this booklet is Term three of three which will take spellings tests throughout the entire academic year. Each week has a different topic and gives pupils three chances to check their spellings of each word. The booklet also allows you to easily keep track of scores with a big score counter in the corner and allows an observer to recognise whether you have awarded commendations/merits (whatever you use!)

Used with a low ability year 10, this PEEL table is used to analyse the poem in regards to the theme of mourning and loss; a part of the Conflict section of the Eduqas Anthology. It is easy to adapt and highlights the when the pupils are hitting the assessment objectives (AO1/2/3). Pupils found the step by step approach to analysing a poem really helpful and can be easily differentiated with sentence stems for example.

A blank fact file pupils can complete for homework or for a research lesson. Covers Shakespeares basic details, family life, school life, society at the time and working life. Easily adaptable too.

Used with a low ability GCSE set, this lesson features a very brief introduction to basic poetic techniques, a discussion on Conflict, a video linked to the poem and an annotation of the poem. The follow-up lesson should be an extended analysis. Also attached is the poetry match worksheet and copy of the poem.

Used with my bottom set year 8, a lesson based on chapter 4 of the Breadwinner. Read the chapter, answer differentiated questions and study/create a persuasive speech based on mobile phones in school (in Chapter 4 Parvana tries to persuade Mother to help her!) Attached is the writing frame to support pupils in their writing.

Used with Year 12 AS Level, Edexcel A Level Literature. This is an introductory lesson to the novel, discussing and working towards a timeline of Conrad's life and influences and also how Conrad uses the technique of an intrusive narrator and how this is used within the novel. This discussion/work should influence their reading in regards to Conrad's writing style.

Used with bottom set year 7, also doing the fresh start programme, reading The Memory Cage by Ruth Eastham. This PPT is based on the first chapter, reading the opening chapter, discussing Alzheimer's, answering questions based on the chapter and writing a description of a family member. Attached is also the writing frame for the pupils.

This is a lesson used with bottom set year 7 who require a lot of help and scaffolding. Based on the section in Boy by Roald Dahl, towards the start, in which he describes his school. Pupils read the section and then answer some comprehension questions, followed by planning and writing a description. Attached also is the writing frame I used to support the pupils in their planning.

A Gothic Fiction scheme of work for Key Stage 3 English. This lesson is based on the SAMOSA techniques used with the opening of section 2 in Of Mice and Men. Pupils annotate, analyse and use this knowledge to create their own piece of descriptive writing. Used with a top set year 9 (low achieving school) but easily adaptable.

This lesson is an end of a topic lesson based on the shooting of Lennie. Pupils will learn how to write an eyewitness account based on Of Mice and Men. I used an update to date issue as an example of an eyewitness account from the terrorist attack at the Bataclan theatre, Paris; this ensures pupils are using a modern resource but you can also discuss British Values. I used this with a top set year 9 (low achieving school) but it is easily adaptable. Includes Powerpoint and differentiated resource.

This is a booklet I created for a CPD I led on 'Writing for meaning'. It features information and details for staff of how to teach different types of writing (transactional writing) - including example tasks they could ask pupils to complete based on the type of writing they want to include in their lessons.

This lesson was created for a very low key stage 3 set who are also studying the Fresh Start programme. Based on the first half of chapter 2 of The Breadwinner, there is the opportunity to discuss the state of Afghanistan in the book, reading a specific part of the chapter and planning a piece of descriptive writing based on the action. Also, there is a plan for the pupils to support them in the writing of the descriptive piece.
